CONSTRUCTION EFFECTIVENESS

The company has a policy of continuing self examination to identify areas of improvement which will increase its ability to carry out contracts to a guaranteed quality in accordance with the required time scale and cost plan. This is achieved by the constant monitoring of all operations within the company by senior management and the introduction and refinement of systems to improve effectiveness. This is demonstrated by our activities in the following areas.

Training

The company employs a high quality of managerial and administrative staff, their performance being reviewed and assessed annually. Training programmes are employed to develop the potential of staff and great care is taken to ensure assignment to tasks for which they are suitably qualified and experienced.

Control of Quality

Phoenix were one of the first electrical contractors to establish a Quality Assured System to meet the standards BS5750: Part 1:1987 and ISO 9001 - 1987 and received accreditation in 1988. All company operations are carried out in accordance with the procedures laid down in the QA System which is now on our newly install FASTRAK System, Which can be accessed from any where in the world using a standard Web Browser and it is company policy to prepare Specific Quality Plans for all contracts.

Operative Effectiveness

The company has an ongoing programme to improve the productivity of operatives on site and find the following measures most effective in achieving this objective. Its work force is directly employed, with the exception of items of work which are sublet, and consists of JIB graded electricians who have been with the company for a number of years and whose work has been found to be satisfactory. The company does not use self employed operatives, and encourages clean, tidy, well organised sites. Good facilities are a great benefit in motivating the workforce. The working of excessive hours is discouraged, but high productivity is achieved by operating a production bonus which encourages 100% effort for good rewards, without the deterioration of standards which are the consequence of long working hours.

Computerisation

The company has invested heavily in the use of advanced technology, and all financial, estimating, design, drawing, programming, procurement etc functions are computerised. Sixteen CAD stations at Head Office use AutoDesk's Architectural Desk Top 3.3, with an A0 laser plotter. It is company policy on major contracts to provide CAD facilities on site, ADSL or modem linked to Head Office.

Health and Safety

Phoenix are also one of the first electrical contractors to become certified under the new OHSAS 18001. The company fully subscribes to the initiatives within the industry to improve health and safety performance generally. The company has documented management systems covering safety which complies with the relevant standards, with particular attention to the Construction Regulations. Regular internal safety audits are carried out by the company Safety Officer and weekly "Tool Box Talks" are held to promote on-site safety, at which attendance by all operatives is mandatory.
